Multiple FIRs should not be pursued needlessly over the same dispute

The State’s counter-affidavit disclosed three proceedings. The proceedings arose from the same set of facts. One had been stayed and another was not pressed. The parties stated that the other proceedings need not be pursued. The Court took note of that common position. Duplicative proceedings can multiply litigation over one factual controversy. The Court directed a practical path for the remaining case. The order aimed to avoid continuation of unnecessary parallel cases. Smt. Shalini Bhateja & Anr. v. The State of U.P. & Ors. | 2026 INSC 28
