Operative orders must be confined to lawful jurisdiction
The High Court’s operative portion included several separate directions. One direction imposed six years of disqualification. The Supreme Court scrutinised the legal authority for that direction. A valid finding does not automatically authorise every consequential order. Each direction must have a statutory basis. Judicial orders must follow the powers conferred by law. The appeal challenged the direction as beyond the High Court’s authority. The judgment addressed that jurisdictional objection. K.M. Shaji v. M. V. Nikesh Kumar & Ors. | 2026 INSC 111
