Meaning of a police station

Section 2(s) CrPC refers separately to a “post” and a “place”. Its definition is exhaustive as to posts and places, while also including a specified local area. A local area may be a town, city, taluk, village, district or even a State. A police station need not always be a separately identified building. A police post held by a police officer may satisfy the statutory definition. The State’s declaration may identify one post or place or a group of them. The declaration required by the provision is formal in character. The Court rejected an unduly narrow reading of the definition.
